Once again, lack of redundancy causes outage

Once again, lack of redundancy on behalf of Telecom has caused intergral and emergency services to go offline for the most part. Around 6.05am on Sunday the power to a network building on Mayoral Drive was cut, affecting broadband, email authentication, as well as Telecom's own and other customers computer services such as databases, paging systems and eftpos.

Power wasn't restored until around 9.15am.

Staff in 111 call centres had to use pen and paper and write down the information to give to police, fire and ambulance. Luckily no emergency calls were missed.

Almost all major ISP's were affected, with TelstraClear being the only one to handle the outage.

This makes one question the reliability of Telecom, when a single power connection is cut, and part of their network is bought to its knees. Surely a building that plays such an integral part to the network would have UPS's and backup generators, and multiple power connections.

This is surely the sign of a company that does not care about its customers or even the people of New Zealand when a 111 emergency call centre is thrown into the mix.

No wonder Xtra won worst ISP for the third year in a row.
